What is Tools for Tolerance® for Teens? This program is an intensive all-day educational experience designed to help students understand and constructively challenge stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination. Tools for Tolerance® for Teens inspires students to learn from the past, engage in the present and assume responsibility for a better future. All Tools for Tolerance® for Teens programs take place at the New York Tolerance Center, a secure, multimedia learning environment in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Tools for Tolerance® for Teens is supported by a generous grant from the State of New York, Department of Criminal Justice Services, the New York City Department of Education and the Klarman Family Foundation. Program tuition includes, lunch and educational materials. Limited grant funding is available for qualified groups. Who should attend? Students, grades 7-12 in classes or groups of 30 to 40. The Power of Words and Images (Grades 7-9)This program explores the historical and contemporary use of language, art and imagery in the media, advertising and politics. Students engage in activities such as the Point of View Diner and GlobalHate.com to analyze and discuss how the media is used to promote or hinder tolerance. This program encourages critical thinking not only about how young people speak to each other, but about how society speaks to young people through media, marketing and the Internet.  Learn Then, Learn Now, Learn How© (Grades 10-12)This program explores past and current genocides, crimes against humanity and intolerance within the United States. Students discover what is happening today in the global community and the nation and how these events are related to lessons from history. Students are asked to consider how they can become agents for positive change. This program includes personal testimony from a genocide survivor, and activities to inspire meaningful take-aways from the day.
